TEFAF Maastricht is set to unveil a remarkable selection of design history, featuring two iconic creations by Dutch architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld: a rare 'Folded Aluminium' chair and his playful 'Strandwagen' (Beach Buggy). The 'Folded Aluminium' chair, a testament to Rietveld's modernist vision, embodies his aspiration for mass-produced, experimental furniture. Crafted from a single sheet of aluminum with distinctive strengthening perforations, this chair, dating from the 1950s, never achieved widespread production, making it an exceptionally rare piece. Only six such chairs were ever made, with the version on display being one of two 'high' variants, offered at a price exceeding €500,000. Its design lineage traces back to a 1951 sketch by Rietveld, currently preserved in the archives of Het Nieuwe Instituut.
Alongside the chair, Galerie Van den Bruinhorst will present Rietveld's vibrant, geometrically shaped 'Strandwagen,' estimated to be from the latter half of the 1920s and valued at over €250,000. Originally designed in 1923 for transporting children to the seaside, this wooden beach buggy, painted in striking primary colors, could have influenced Rietveld's transformation of his 'Slatted Armchair' into the renowned 'Red and Blue Chair' in the same year. This 'Strandwagen' is one of only four existing examples from an original production of approximately seven or eight. The showcased piece boasts an extraordinary provenance, having been continuously owned by a single family since its creation and meticulously documented with photographs across generations, illustrating its journey and use over time. Such comprehensive documentation significantly enhances its historical and market value, as noted by design expert Ad van den Bruinhorst.
Beyond Rietveld's contributions, TEFAF Maastricht continues to be a pivotal platform for significant midcentury furniture. Visitors can explore a 1952 cabinet by Osvaldo Borsani, presented by Galleria Rossella Colombari, which skillfully merges Italian modernism with traditional Chinese artistry. The gallery also features works by Carlo Mollino and Carlo Zen. Furthermore, Friedman Benda will display Formafantasma's 'Formation' collection, characterized by cherry wood and aluminum and drawing inspiration from Shaker design, Frank Lloyd Wright, and George Nakashima. David Gill will highlight Zaha Hadid's innovative 2016 'UltraStellar' double seat bench, alongside lyrical pieces in walnut wood and patinated copper by Valentin Loellmann. These diverse exhibits collectively celebrate the enduring legacy and ongoing evolution of design, reflecting a blend of historical depth and contemporary innovation.
