Unveiling the Path to Collegiate Hockey Glory: A Tournament Outlook
The Current Landscape: Teams Poised for the Postseason
As of this morning, the NCAA Tournament picture is taking shape, informed by both the NPI rankings and current conference standings. It's important to note that teams projected to win their respective conference tournaments are indicated in italics, with these predictions stemming from their current in-conference point percentages.
Certain Contenders and Bubble Hopefuls: Who's In and Who's On the Brink?
Eleven teams have firmly secured their spots in the tournament: Michigan, Michigan State, North Dakota, Western Michigan, Penn State, Providence, Quinnipiac, Denver, Cornell, Minnesota-Duluth, and Dartmouth. Additionally, three teams are currently on the cusp of qualification: Wisconsin, Boston College, and Augustana. Two teams, Minnesota State and Bentley, are projected as automatic qualifiers through their conference championships. Unfortunately, UConn currently finds itself just outside the bubble.
Anticipating the Bracket: Regional Breakdowns
My predicted bracket features four regional matchups. In the Worcester Regional, Michigan is slated to face Bentley, while Penn State will compete against Cornell. The Loveland Regional sees Western Michigan taking on Boston College, and Denver battling Wisconsin. The Albany Regional will host Michigan State against Minnesota State, and Quinnipiac versus Minnesota-Duluth. Finally, the Sioux Falls Regional will feature North Dakota against Augustana, and Providence against Dartmouth.
Key Considerations and Shifting Dynamics Within the Projections
A notable adjustment in my projections involved swapping Penn State and Denver's positions to avoid a first-round pairing of the No. 5 and No. 8 seeds, which is generally avoided by the committee. While this places Penn State in Michigan's bracket, facing top teams is inevitable for a championship run. Minnesota State's narrow victory in the CCHA regular season has positioned them as an auto-bid, though Augustana's at-large bid could vanish if they falter in their conference tournament. UConn, currently at No. 15, needs strong performances in their final regular season games and a deep run in the Hockey East tournament to secure an at-large bid. Dartmouth and Minnesota-Duluth are strong contenders; Dartmouth is on track for its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1980, and Minnesota-Duluth has experienced a significant resurgence this season.
Crucial Encounters: Games to Watch This Weekend
Several upcoming games carry significant weight. No. 12 Wisconsin will face No. 5 Penn State in a two-game series; while Penn State's seeding is the only remaining stake for them, a split in the series would greatly enhance Wisconsin's NCAA Tournament prospects. No. 13 Boston College, after a recent loss, needs a victory against No. 20 UMass to solidify their bubble position. Lastly, No. 15 UConn's road game against No. 6 Providence is a must-win for the Huskies to improve their chances for an at-large bid.
