The Sierra Pacific High School girls' basketball team and the San Joaquin Memorial boys' team both made history by clinching Division II state championships at Sacramento's Golden 1 Center. Notably, each team triumphed over a familiar rival from the Central Section. The Golden Bears of Sierra Pacific secured their victory against St. Joseph from Santa Maria with a 56-47 score, marking their second state title since their 2018 Division V win. The Panthers of San Joaquin Memorial narrowly defeated Bakersfield Christian 46-45, also earning their second state championship.
Sierra Pacific's success was largely fueled by the dynamic performance of the Ayuen sisters—senior twins Nyang (11 points) and Apajok (15 points), along with sophomore Ayak (13 points)—who collectively contributed 39 points and 21 rebounds. Head coach Victor Chavarin Jr. praised his team's determination, especially after overcoming an 11-point lead that was cut to two by halftime. On the boys' side, San Joaquin Memorial rallied from a five-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Senior guard Sajjin Sidu hit a crucial jumper to secure a two-point lead, while 6-foot-9 UC Irvine commit Parker Spees led the Panthers with 19 points. This victory was particularly sweet for the Panthers, as it was their first win against Bakersfield Christian in three encounters this season, adding another state title to coach Brad Roznovsky's achievements.
These championship victories highlight the culmination of hard work, strategic gameplay, and unwavering team spirit. Both Sierra Pacific and San Joaquin Memorial demonstrated resilience and a profound commitment to excellence, inspiring their communities and setting a high standard for aspiring athletes. Their triumphs are a testament to the power of collective effort and the pursuit of greatness in sports.
