Lions Appoint Former Cardinals' Drew Petzing as Offensive Coordinator

Instructions

The Detroit Lions have officially announced the appointment of Drew Petzing, formerly the offensive coordinator for the Arizona Cardinals, to serve in the same capacity for their team. This significant staffing change comes as the Lions look to reinforce their offensive leadership after a period of adjustment.

Last season, the Lions faced offensive challenges following the departure of their successful play-caller, Ben Johnson, who moved to become the head coach for the Bears. The subsequent play-calling duties were taken over by Josh Morton, but the team's performance led to his mid-season demotion by Head Coach Dan Campbell, culminating in Morton's dismissal on January 6.

Petzing, 38, brings a wealth of experience, having directed the Cardinals' offense and play-calling since 2023. He now inherits a Lions offense that demonstrated considerable strength, ranking as the top-scoring team in 2024 and tying for fourth in 2025. Despite the Cardinals' 3-14 record in the previous season, largely influenced by quarterback Kyler Murray's injury, Petzing's offensive unit still managed to rank 19th in total yards per game (325.8), 7th in passing yards per game (232.6), and 23rd in points per game (20.9). His career before joining the Cardinals included roles as an offensive assistant for the Minnesota Vikings and as a tight ends coach and quarterbacks coach for the Cleveland Browns, showcasing his diverse coaching background.

This move underscores the dynamic nature of professional sports, where strategic changes are constantly being made to achieve excellence. Petzing's arrival is a testament to the Lions' ambition to not only recover but to build a formidable offense that can consistently compete at the highest level, driving towards a future filled with triumphant performances and inspiring their fanbase with renewed vigor and determination.
