Leica has consistently set benchmarks in optical engineering, creating lenses that redefine visual storytelling. Historic examples such as the Leica 50mm f/2 Summicron-M ASPH and the Leica 28mm Elmarit-M f/2.8 exemplify the brand's dedication to superior image quality, often accompanied by a premium price. Now, the company is revitalizing its renowned Noctilux series with an unprecedented addition: the first-ever 35mm f/1.2 variant.
Originating in 1966, the Noctilux series derives its name from the Latin terms “noctu” (night) and “lux” (light), reflecting its exceptional speed. These lenses, known for apertures as wide as f/0.95, represent the pinnacle of optical innovation. The new 35mm f/1.2 ASPH model broadens the Noctilux lineup, which previously included only 50mm and 75mm focal lengths. This lens boasts a sophisticated design with 10 elements arranged in 5 groups, incorporating three aspherical elements. A floating element system maintains consistent imaging performance across the entire focusing range. Leica highlights that the lens is meticulously crafted in Wetzlar using advanced Precision Glass Molding (PGM) technology, ensuring “exceptional quality standards” through a highly precise manufacturing process. This in-house control over the PGM process, encompassing optical design, ultra-precise toolmaking, metrology, and high-temperature glass pressing, significantly expands the boundaries of optical and mechanical capabilities.
Functionally, the lens offers a minimum focusing distance of 0.5 meters and features 11 aperture blades, weighing a mere 416g with a length of 50.2mm. When paired with the M EV1, focusing becomes effortless. While Leica M rangefinder cameras typically focus down to 70cm using the optical viewfinder, closer distances (between 70cm and 50cm) are achieved via Live View on the rear screen or the Visoflex electronic viewfinder. The Noctilux-M 35’s expansive focusing throw facilitates precise adjustments at these close ranges, demonstrating its versatility. The introduction of this 35mm Noctilux allows photographers to capture a broader perspective while retaining the cherished Noctilux aesthetic, making it an ideal choice for portraiture, reportage, documentary, and street photography. Given the acclaimed performance of its predecessor, the 50mm f/0.95, high expectations are set for the new 35mm f/1.2, which is now available for $9,650.
This innovative step by Leica underscores a continuous pursuit of excellence and a commitment to providing photographers with tools that empower creative vision. By pushing the boundaries of lens design and manufacturing, Leica not only honors its legacy but also paves the way for new photographic expressions, encouraging artists to capture the world with unparalleled clarity and depth.
