Svenskt Tenn, a celebrated Swedish brand with a rich history, is presenting a special exhibition as part of Stockholm Creative Edition. This showcase, titled "Standing Tall," highlights a collection of six cabinets crafted by the influential designer Josef Frank, including a refreshed version of his Cabinet 522. The exhibition provides a rare glimpse into Frank's enduring design philosophy, emphasizing both beauty and practicality in his furniture pieces.
The exhibition, located at Svenskt Tenn's main store in Stockholm, features cabinets originally conceived by Frank between the 1930s and 1950s. According to Tora Grape, the brand's marketing and communications director, these designs perfectly illustrate Frank's dedication to blending artistry with utility, evident in every meticulously crafted detail, right down to the keys. Among the pieces on display is the new Cabinet 522, elegantly upholstered in fine horsehair fabric, available in classic black or white, produced by John Boyd Textiles in England. Other notable exhibits include the Flora Cabinet, adorned with 115 botanical illustrations, and the Stockholm Cabinet, featuring a detailed map of the city. Additionally, two chest of drawers, Cabinet 881 and Cabinet 2192, demonstrate Frank's innovative use of various wood veneers and drawer configurations.
These distinctive cabinets are displayed against a vibrant curtain backdrop, enhancing their individual characteristics. A common thread uniting all six pieces is their elevated leg design, a deliberate choice by Frank to maintain visibility between the floor and wall, contributing to an open and airy aesthetic. Crafted from dark timbers and accented with brass fittings, these designs reflect Frank's known preference for warmer metals. This exhibition not only celebrates Frank's iconic designs but also underscores Svenskt Tenn's commitment to preserving and reinterpreting design heritage, offering insights into the creative process and exceptional craftsmanship that define these timeless pieces.
This event inspires a deeper appreciation for design that transcends fleeting trends, demonstrating how thoughtful creation, blending functionality with artistic expression, can lead to objects that remain relevant and cherished across generations. It encourages us to recognize the value in heritage brands that continue to innovate while honoring their foundational principles, fostering a sense of continuity and excellence in the design world.
