Fortnite's Original Mode Becomes Free-to-Play

The Genesis of "Save the World"

The initial iteration of Fortnite, where players constructed defenses to ward off zombie-like creatures called Husks, is set to become complimentary after nearly a decade. Epic Games officially announced that "Fortnite: Save the World" will be available to all players at no cost starting April 16.

Pricing Evolution and Relaunch Preparation

Throughout its history, "Fortnite: Save the World" has seen various price points, most recently bundled with in-game currency for $19.99. Its early access debut in 2017 was priced at $39.99. As the free-to-play transition approaches, Epic has temporarily removed the mode from digital storefronts.

From Early Access to Free-to-Play: A Full Circle

While Fortnite is predominantly recognized for its Battle Royale component introduced in 2017, the "Save the World" mode, originally conceived as a loot-and-build survival experience, was in development for years prior. First showcased at Comic-Con in San Diego in 2012, it was Epic's pioneering title built on Unreal Engine 4, always with a potential free-to-play future. Despite a previous change of plans regarding its free access, the mode is now finally realizing that initial vision in 2026.

Broad Platform Accessibility, with Mobile Exceptions

"Fortnite: Save the World" will be accessible free of charge on a wide array of platforms including Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Additionally, it will be supported by cloud gaming services like Amazon Luna, Nvidia GeForce Now, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. However, it will not be available on smartphones, tablets, or the original Nintendo Switch, including through cloud streaming.

Pre-registration Incentives and Founder Benefits

Epic has initiated a pre-registration campaign for "Save the World's" free launch, aiming to attract one million sign-ups. To incentivize participation, in-game rewards, such as a free "Save the World" hero, are being offered. Existing players who previously purchased the game will receive Superchargers, Vouchers, and Gold on April 16. Founders, specifically, will continue to earn V-Bucks through daily quests, mission alerts, Storm Shield Defense Missions, and ongoing challenges.
