Exakt MFG Unveils Tech-Driven Artisanal Furniture at Stockholm Design Days

Instructions

Christoffer Söderqvist has launched a new furniture venture, Exakt MFG, which aims to fuse advanced technology with traditional craftsmanship to achieve large-scale artisanal manufacturing. This innovative approach was showcased at the recent Stockholm Design Days, where the brand made its official debut.

Exakt MFG represents a natural progression for Söderqvist, building upon his extensive experience in custom carpentry, which includes producing kitchens, retail fixtures, and various furnishings from his facility in Skurup, Sweden. With over three decades dedicated to crafting products for other enterprises, Söderqvist decided it was time to introduce his own line. He partnered with Superlab, a design firm based in Helsingborg, to assist in developing the inaugural collection. The brand's objective, as presented at 'The Listening Lounge' exhibition during Stockholm Design Days, is to offer premium furniture directly to buyers, ensuring affordability and competitive pricing.

Söderqvist highlighted the brand's core philosophy of vertical integration, a strategy that minimizes reliance on external suppliers to lower costs and foster a more sustainable, cyclical production model. He drew parallels to the fashion industry, suggesting this integrated approach is vital for contemporary furniture manufacturing. Exakt MFG plans to establish its own showrooms and an online sales platform, mirroring the direct-to-consumer model popularized by companies like Tesla. The initial collection features Söderqvist's designs, such as the playfully named 'Assprint' stool, alongside a sofa and shelving unit created in collaboration with Superlab. Niklas Madsen, CEO of Superlab and a long-time acquaintance of Söderqvist, shared his enthusiasm for combining factory machinery with traditional craft to fill existing market gaps. The collection also includes a solid oak chest of drawers and a sideboard with matching speakers, designed to complement high-fidelity audio equipment. These pieces were displayed in a Japanese listening lounge-inspired setting at the Swedish design association, Svensk Form, during Stockholm Design Days. The brand emphasizes that its method is about 'artisanry at scale, enabled by cutting-edge technology,' with Söderqvist defining artisanry as a blend of 'skill, care, and responsibility' that guides his design ethos and commitment to responsible creation.

Exakt MFG exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to design and production, demonstrating how innovation and traditional values can converge to create high-quality, accessible, and sustainable products. This venture not only redefines the manufacturing process but also fosters a deeper connection between creator and consumer, encouraging a more mindful appreciation for well-crafted items. It serves as an inspiring example of how embracing ethical practices and technological advancements can lead to a more responsible and flourishing industry.
