A detailed examination of historical pricing data reveals a stark reality for various storage products. For instance, popular portable SSDs, once available at competitive rates, have seen their costs skyrocket. The 2TB Extreme Portable USB 3.2 SSD, which previously retailed for as low as $100, now commands $216. Similarly, another SanDisk Portable SSD model, priced at just $55 in 2023, has jumped to $135. Even newly launched 'Creator' series products, like the 4TB Creator Pro Portable SSD, witnessed a price surge from $266 to $589 in merely a month. Beyond SSDs, traditional HDDs and memory cards are not immune to these price escalations. The root cause of these soaring prices lies in the insatiable appetite of AI development for memory components. AI data centers require vast amounts of storage for two critical functions: training large language models with extensive datasets and accommodating the increased RAM needed for their operational demands. The sustained engagement with AI chatbots, for example, necessitates greater memory allocation to retain conversational context. While RAM and SSDs utilize different types of memory, both are in high demand by these data centers, leading to a profound impact on the global supply chain. This immense demand has even prompted major manufacturers like Micron to exit the consumer memory market entirely, focusing exclusively on enterprise storage solutions. Despite the multitude of brands producing SSDs and RAM, the core memory dies are primarily sourced from a limited number of manufacturers. These companies are hesitant to significantly ramp up production due to concerns that the current 'AI bubble' might eventually burst, leaving them with excess manufacturing capacity. Consequently, the finite supply, coupled with relentless demand, ensures that prices will remain elevated for the foreseeable future. Even if the AI market experiences a downturn, the existing contracts and the time required for market adjustments suggest that prices will not immediately revert to previous levels.
